5. Overseas disclosure and international transfers
5.1 We store the Service’s database, files and authentication records in Australia. Our Service Providers may process personal information in other countries in the course of providing their services, including the United States. Our email delivery Service Provider holds records of the emails we send in the United States. Our bot-detection Service Provider processes information in the countries in which it operates.
5.2 For individuals whose personal information is subject to the GDPR or the UK GDPR: the Company is established in Australia. The European Commission has not adopted an adequacy decision in respect of Australia. Where we transfer personal information to a country that is not the subject of an adequacy decision or adequacy regulations, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as standard data protection clauses, or on a derogation permitted by the GDPR or the UK GDPR. You may request a copy of the relevant safeguards by contacting us.
6. Retention
6.1 We retain personal information for as long as it is necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, and in particular:
- account information, profile information and Content: for as long as you hold an account, subject to section 7;

- records used to limit misuse of sign-in, which hold your email address and IP address only in a non-readable form: no longer than one day;
- a work email address: until you confirm it or the confirmation code expires, after which we retain only its domain; and
- any personal information we need to comply with a legal obligation, to resolve a dispute, to complete an investigation, or to establish, exercise or defend a legal claim: until that need ends.
6.2 Copies of personal information may remain in backup systems for a limited period after deletion until they are overwritten.
7. Closing your account
7.1 You may close your account at any time from the Leave Slow News Day page. When you close your account we delete your account information, profile information, comments, drafts, follows and authentication records. Marks you have given continue to count but are no longer associated with you.
7.2 When you close your account we remove your account identifier from your activity records, reduce the time of each record to the week in which it occurred, and replace references to your own articles with the topic of the article. We retain the resulting records for the purposes described in section 3.
8. Security
8.1 We hold personal information electronically, using Service Providers’ systems. We take reasonable steps to protect personal information from misuse, interference and loss, and from unauthorised access, modification and disclosure. Access to Members’ email addresses and activity records is restricted to authorised personnel. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee the security of personal information.
9. Cookies
9.1 We use cookies that are necessary to provide the Service: to keep you signed in, to complete the joining process in the browser in which it began, and to record whether you asked to stay signed in. If you select “Keep me signed in”, your sign-in cookies last for 30 days after your last visit. Otherwise they expire when you close your browser.
9.2 The joining page loads a script from our bot-detection Service Provider, which collects information from your browser and device in order to determine whether you are a person.
9.3 We do not use advertising or analytics cookies, and we do not place third-party advertising or analytics scripts on the Service.
10. Automated processing
10.1 We use automated processing to select and order the Content presented to Members, to limit misuse of the Service and to assess the integrity of activity on the Service. Where a decision based solely on automated processing produces legal effects concerning you or similarly significantly affects you, you may ask for the decision to be reviewed by a person, express your point of view and contest the decision, by contacting us.

We may decline a request where Data Protection Laws permit us to do so, and will give you our reasons.
13. Right to object
13.1 If the GDPR or the UK GDPR applies to you, you have the right to object at any time, on grounds relating to your particular situation, to processing of your personal information that is based on our legitimate interests, including profiling based on those interests. If you object, we will no longer process the information for that purpose unless we demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds for the processing which override your interests, rights and freedoms, or the processing is for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims.
